Red 1999 Peugeot 406 Front Right View |
I have an 1999 Peugeot 406 and the ABS and Low brake fluid lights keep coming on.
Fluid level is max and I think the pads are ok, but the lights go out
sometimes when I turn off the engine and turn it back on again. Help
please.
Answer: You can do the test to see if you need a new master cylinder:
1. Start engine, place in neutral.
2. Put foot on the brake pedal, HARD!!!
3. Brake pedal should stay in place, NOT slowly oozing downwards.
4. If you feel the brake pedal going down slowly, YOU NEED a new master brake cylinder.
5. If brake pedal stays firm, your Master cylinder is good.
6. Now check immediately for fluid on the ground, behind tires. This means leaky “wheel cylinder”. otherwise look for leaky brake lines. ESPECIALLY where the brake line goes over/around the fuel tank. Rainwater collects here on Peugeot’s.

On the 406, there are ABS electronic sensors on each front wheel. These could be the problem?
FROM THE 406 HANDBOOK: page 127.
Warning lamp for handbrake and too low brake fluid:
This means:
Handbrake lever could be slightly pulled upwards. (maybe your problem? There is a little switch under the lever. Is it pushed down fully when you release the hand lever? )
Brake fluid level is too low (not your case? perhaps the floating sensor gadget in the filling cap is stuck, even though the fluid level is OK)
There is a disturbance in the brake system if lit, in combination with the ABS warning light.
Stop immediately.
Consult a Peugeot service point.

Warning light for Anti-brake blocking system (ABS)
Goes on each time the car ignition is started, for 3 seconds. If the lamp comes on, while driving more than 12 km per hour, this indicates a disturbance in the ABS anti-blocking system. The normal brake operation with power brakes will stay active. Consult a Peugeot service point.
