Silver 1999 Volkswagen Jetta Left Side View |
Where is the windshield wiper relay on a 1999 Volkswagen Jetta? My 1999 Volkswagen Jetta windshield wipers slowly quiet work. I just replaced the motor for the windshield wiper
and they still don’t work. I think it might be the relay but the thing
is the make a jerking motion they move about 1/4 up and go right back down and that’s it. I don’t know were to go from here.
Answer: There were 2 jetta models in 1999. I’m assuming due to the nature of your problem that you have the new style 1999 Jetta. I do not believe your problem is located in the relay, but I will give you the location of the relay anyway. If you remove the closeout panel under the dashboard on the drivers side, you will find your
relay panel on the far left (drivers side). On the right side of the
relay panel (passenger side), there is one relay that is twice as big as
the rest of the relays. This is your wiper relay. If I remember
correctly, it’s relay number 337.
If your wipers are trying to move, your relay is doing it’s job.
You’ve already replaced the motor (old motor probably wasn’t bad). You
are obviously skilled enough to replace what’s actually bad. If you
remove your wiper assembly from the car, take the arms off the wiper
motor, try to move the pivots where the wipers mount. They should move
easily and smoothly. I’m betting yours won’t. You need to replace what
is called the wiper base, some people call it the wiper transmission.
It’s basically the large silver tubular object containing the wiper
pivots where your motor bolts to and the wipers attach. Please note, the
new one will not come with a motor or the connecting arms from the
motor to the pivots. You will need to reuse these parts if they are
still good. If not they will need to be purchased separately.
Good Luck!
