Does 44 PSI on my ’04 VW Passat rear tires sound right? I need some suggestion here. Thanks a lot.
Answer: It is correct, however, its for a fully
loaded vehicle driven at high speeds. VW has for a number of years had a
half load spec (usually no more than 2 people and 2 suitcases is
considered to be a half loaded vehicle) and a fully loaded vehicle for
loads above that.
Most people don’t add pressure to the tires when they drive with more than 2 people, so in most of the dealerships I was in, the tire pressure was set at maximum load even though it often gave a slightly harsher ride at low speeds. One advantage was that fuel economy had a slight improvement (less rolling resistance) of 1-4% over the half loaded tire pressures. Handling at higher speeds also improved as there was less tendency of the side wall rolling under the bead of the rim.
If you run the vehicle with only the driver, I’d recommend a lower pressure, use the half specification (which is on the door jamb or on the gas door flap) as the ride can be unduely harsh when set at full load tire pressures. BUT don’t forget to add air when driving with more than 2 people!
