1998 Mercedes Benz CLK320 Coupe |
My 1998 Mercedes-Benz CLK320 shuts off. We recently replaced the fuel filter and fuel pump and the fuel related problem still continues. When the car suddenly shuts off a quick shot of starting fluid and it runs again.
Any ideas on what else could potentially be leading to these abrupt
stops would be very beneficial. There is also no check engine lights or
codes. Thanks
Answer: Sudden engine stops with no error codes are often associated with the crankshaft position sensor failing. (do not confuse with camshaft position sensor, it can affect the starting however never causes engine to quit).
The quick and dirty method of diagnosing the crankshaft sensor is to cool it down, since it often starts conducting again when cooled down – just pour some water over it and see if the car starts (don’t worry everything is watertight down there).
The sensor is a bit difficult to access since it is mounted on the edge between the engine and the transmission, by the firewall. It is being held by a single screw (that usually needs small hands and some sophisticated set of flexing extensions to undo).
There’s number of other reasons which could make the M112 quit, but they require extensive and time consuming diagnostics.
