Red 2001 Chevrolet Silverado Right Side View |
Okay, so my friend is borrowing my 2001 Chevrolet Silverado. The gas
gauge has been screwed up (a common problem with Chevy trucks apparently
after online searches), so I advised him to just make sure that there’s
gas in the tank by monitoring the trip odometer.
Well, the other day he was driving and the truck just died on him. I
suspected it was out of gas (can’t know for sure with the screwed up gas
gauge), so I added about 6 gallons to it. It turns over, but won’t
start. I’m guessing it’s a fuel pump and, with the help of a neighbor,
am thinking about fixing it myself. Question is: how can I make sure
that it is, in fact, the fuel pump? I know it can be tricky to fix, but
I’m up for it (have another car to drive while I work on it). What steps
would I go through to come to a conclusion about this (am trying to
avoid going to the shop…really wanna fix it myself!) Thanks!
Answer: You still need to drop the tank. Have buddy
turn the key on while you listen for the hum from the tank. If no, just
bang on the tank with a stick when they turn the key on. If it starts
than the pump is pooched, new pump comes with a filter. Have fun
dropping the tank to get to it. If it is like most GM` s it`s worth
lifting the floor mat to see if they ran the fuel pump wires under the
drivers side of mat and it has worn out below the area your heel for
your shoe sits as GM had a bad habit of doing this only for the fuel
pump/gauge and always ran it under the floor mat under the drivers floor
mat.otherwise check your fuel pressure regulator.
