"1999 Volkswagen Beetle Electrical Problems"

1999 White Volkswagen Beetle

I bought a 1999 VW Beetle a year or 2 ago. Shortly after purchase the cruise control stopped working, the windows automatically rolling up when the key is inserted in the door stopped working, and the gas gauge stopped working, and the door dinging when the key is left in the car has stopped working. My keyless entry had stopped working for quite awhile, and then one day just started working again. I have checked the fuses. Any ideas as to what could be causing these problems?
Answer: Volkswagen’s have notiously bad electrical systems — if you check the Consumer Reports Used Car Buying Guide, you’ll see a big black circle next to ALL VWs, but especially older New Beetles.
My 2000 NB has some problems but not nearly as many as yours! What kind of mileage is on it?
Getting these problems fixed will cost you a LOT. You should try making a list of the things you can live without, and see if you can get just the others fixed.
Check your fuse box, BTW — if there are blown fuses, replace ‘em, but it they blow again, be aware that there’s a problem that replacing fuses will only prolong.
