"How To Replace The Key Battery on 2000 BMW 740i"

2000 BMW 740i Sports Right Side View

How to replace the battery on a 2000 BMW 740i Remote Key? My remote key was working fine but then it stop opening the doors. It does work manually to lock/unlock but does not work when you press unlock/lock/trunk. Does the remote have BATTERY that needs to be replaced?

Answer: In most newer 740′s the key remote does have a battery (technically a capacitor) which gets charged while the engine is running or the ignition turned on.The battery is not replaceable since it is integral to the key itself.
In some older models the battery is replaceable and there is a plastic cover at the back of the key which you must first pry off, then unscrew 2 small screws to access the battery.
If you can only manually open the doors with the key being inserted into the keyhole, then you have a problem (but not necessarily the key).
First, check if another key remote (your duplicate) can operate the locks using the buttons in the remote assuming that the battery is charged. If it does then the former key is defective and should be replaced. If it does not, then both keys should be re-initialized and then re-tested. If both still does not work, then the car should be hooked up to a BMW
diagnostic machine to find out what is the problem with the central locking system. If there is no duplicate available then the only key should be re-initialized and tested again. Initialization is done by holding the key upward pointed approximately to the rear view mirror position, press the unlock button continuously with the fingers of one hand, then press the lock button three times with the fingers of another hand. Continue pressing the unlock button until the door locks cycle automatically. After a few seconds, with or without door cycling, initialization is done and you can test the remote. Usually it is a bad key.
