"The Air Conditioning Only Comes Out from The Defroster on 1996 Ford Probe"

1996 Ford Probe Air Conditioning Compressor

I have problems with the air conditioning on my 1996 Ford Probe. The air conditioning now only comes out the Defroster vents. Its Cold. However all other selections whether they are Floor, Mix or Max air all come out the same only in the Defroster vent. The Off button works. Any ideas about it? The little air coming out of there does not feel as comfortble as when it blows in your face.
Answer: You have a problem with one of the following: Directional blend door, directional door actuator, direction selector switch and/or vacuum lines.
If you can look down by your gas pedal, towards the center console. You may need to remove some plastic covers to see into the center console area. You should see a silver or gold color small cylinder with a lever attached to it. The lever looks like it is attached to something on a plastic box.
Work the directional selector switch (defrost, vent, floor, etc.) and see if the lever moves up and down (the car needs to be running). If it does, everything should be okay except for maybe a broken directional door (inside the black plastic box). If the door is broken, you are looking a t a major repair since this usually requires removeal of the HVAC assembly housing which is behind the dash.
If the lever does not move, you problem may be the vacuun source going to the directional switch. This vacuum source is usually foung coming out of the firewall, by the A/C lines and/or heater hoses. It is usually a small plastic hose. Trace this hose to the engine and check for any holes, slices or breaks in the hose. If that checks out okay, look at the directional switch next, make sure there is vacuum there. Hope this helps.
