1950 Porsche 356 Speedster

356 was the first production car with the Porsche brand. After the Second World War, when Ferdinand Porsche was still in prison, young Ferry was released in 1946 on suspicion of involvement in the development of military vehicles. Soon began to reorganize the company’s engineering firm father and turned it into a sports car manufacturer, which eventually became world famous.

To create an affordable sports car at a difficult time was not easy. Referring to the experience of the Italian sports car manufacturer, Cisitalia, Ferry decided to build the car on the components of a mass production car in such a way that no matter what the cost of production or development could be minimized. Of course, he chose as a Volkswagen Beetle cars donors, which was designed by his father before the war.

Also, due to its root, was 356 never a powerful car – the original 1086 cc air-cooled flat-four could only squeeze out 40 hp, with modified heads. However, Porsche body was pretty easy (745 kg) and super efficient, so that the performance was respectable. As Autocar reported in April 1951: “The acceleration of over 50 mph expected to be far from the size of the engine, and get very quiet.” In later years, the stronger engines and the car was getting faster. The best version was probably the 1600 Speedster, whose style was the most beautiful of all (see above). In addition, 90 CV 356 Super 90 and the purpose of racing 130 hp Carrera Coupe 2000 also worth mentioning.

356 was not very exciting. But it was all – a decent handling, good performance, comfortable, convenient, affordable and well built, though not as contemporary as negotiations Jaguar XK120. Were these two cars dominated the market in the world sports car in the 50s. After 15 years of success and produced 76 303 units, the 356 was retired in 1965. His position was replaced by the 911 even more successful.
