My 1997 GMC Safari has for years now, drives fine for a while then it
has this shuttering and then it act’s like it is starving for gas then
it backfires and stalls. Get it to a shop
(many times) they can not reproduce the issue. I take the van home wait
week to 3 weeks and starts over have changed fuel pump MAF sensor and wiring. Would the ECU cause this?
Answer: This is common on Chevy engines. Many causes are related to this. Your system is OBDII.It may be worth it to take it to Autozone and put a scanner on this. Possible causes are:
Oxygen sensor bank 1
Throttle position sensor
Idle air control valve
Mass Air flow sensor
Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor
Fuel Rail Spider problem

Fuel Rail Spider problem
The danger here,is the backfire. When GM engines do this, they often shatter the starter nose cone that covers the drive and
damaging the flywheel teeth. Common cause for this is the starter not
being shimmed, which is why a shim is supplied with all common GM
starters. If this has happened to your starter, this would also cause
your problem. Remove your starter and check for damage.
