"How To Get Copies of The Ignition Key for 2002 Buick Century"

2002 Buick Century Left Side View

How do I get copies of the ignition key for my 2002 Buick Century? It has a little black security nub thingy on it, so I can’t just go to get it copied at walmart. The dealer I called said it would be $45 to get a copy from him, and that seems way too much to me. Does anyone know how I can get another ignition key without spending so much?

Answer: Call around to local locksmiths. What you have is called a VATS key; it’s not a computer chip, it’s just a little resistor pellet. There are a limited number of resistor values that are used for these keys, so a locksmith should be able to have a replacement blank on hand and can cut you a new key. He’ll be able to measure the resistance on the old key’s resistor and find an exact duplicate. Nothing needs to be programmed; once you have a key with the right value resistor pellet that’s cut correctly, it will work in your car.
