"Installing New Brake Pads on 2004 Volvo S80"

Black 2004 Volvo S80 Front View

When installing new brake pads on a 2004 Volvo S80 do the rotors have to be turned? A mechanic from another dealer told me that should have been done by the dealer that installed my pads and didn’t do it.

Answer: They should be replaced. Volvo’s are typical of European practice in that the rotors wear at a much higher rate than is typical for American or Japanese cars. They are designed to wear out at roughly the same rate as the pads so that both should be replaced together. See that huge lip on the outer edge of your rotor? That’s how thick it USED TO BE. I’ve been doing brake jobs for 7 years in a shop with a large proportion of European vehicles. I’ve never turned a Volvo rotor. Never found one that was enough above the factory discard spec that it could be done on.
