Where and how can I add the transmission fluid in a 1999 VW Jetta? I’m loosing the drive gear?
Answer: It’s going to cost you a lot more than $1.50 I’m afraid. 1995 and newer VW’s use a special transmission fluid, look at the last one on this page http://store.impartsol.com/brakandpowst.…
But, how do you know it’s low on fluid? There is no dipstick nor “level check”. There is a filler port. Low on the driver’s side front corner of the trans. It has a red plastic cap that has to be pried off then you can open the cap. Space is tight so you’d have to make something up with a funnel and piece of hose or something to add any fluid.
VW’s reasoning is that the transmission is “sealed” and shouldn’t need any fluid added. I hate to be the bare of bad news, but most likely adding fluid isn’t going to help anyway. Odds are very good you will have to have the transmission rebuilt. There’s a small chance you could have had a solenoid failure or something but you’d have to take it to a transmission shop to find out. VW transmissions are a big pain to work on, even the dealerships have trouble repairing them. Pick your repair shop carefully and prepare to face a big repair bill in any case. Sorry.
