White 1993 Buick Skylark Right Front View |
Most times on acceleration I get a loud “thump” type noise from what
sounds like the front right side of the car. It is 1993 Buick Skylark
front wheel drive with an automatic transmission V6 3.3liter engine in
it. What can be causing that? What should I check? Also why does it usually hesitate on acceleration from a stop?
Answer: I suspect your 1993 Buick Skylark has well
over 100K on the odometer. My first guess would be your constant
velocity joints are going bad. They do have a normal service life and
100K plus on original factory CV joints is pretty good. It could also be
your ball joints …they, too, have a design life and they are probably
past it right now.
These are parts that need to be replaced in pairs …so while your left CV joint may still have some life in it, it is foolish economy, and a safety concern, to not replace both joints. Same deal with ball joints.
Your hesitation may have nothing to do with the noise you’re hearing and it’s difficult to say what it could be. I have no idea how well or not you’ve taken care of your car over the years. Your fuel injection system may be dirty, the fuel filter might be clogged or your fuel pump might be on the way out. It could also be your Oxygen Sensor(s).
Your best bet would be to bring the car to a *good, highly recommended shop*, some place that’s not gonna rip you off and have them check the car over for you.
Be aware that if they do need to do some work on the CV joints or the ball joints or both, you’re probably looking at a good $500+ repair.
