I have a 1998 Mazda 626 GLX hatchback,
did a conversion from a FS engine to a B5 1.8 DOHC 16 valve last
December. My lines were re-done, leaks repaired and it was working fine.
It still is working but the line becomes frozen a little while after
the AC is turned on. An electrician suggested I put in a thermostat
which I did about 2 months ago, but now I see the problem persisting. I
live in the caribbean. I have also noticed that the unit squeals
sometimes when I turn it on or at random intervals when it is on. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Stephen.
Answer: Some ice on the return metal line is probably okay, because of the humidity
where you live. Wouldn’t hurt to have the freon pressures checked,
because low Freon levels will also do that. What you don’t want is any
ice in the radiator-like cooler in front of the car radiator. Also,
running the unit on MAX cool all the time will tend to add to the ice, as the regular on-off compressor cycling is not used then.
