"2000 Volvo S40: Linkage Between The TCM and ECU"

Silver 2000 Volvo S40 Front View

My 2000 Volvo S40 seems to be shifting erratically. Sometimes it feels like the car is downshifting because the car’s RPMs shoot up when I’m trying to accelerate but the car takes longer than it should to get into the correct gear, sometimes shudder. This problem also occurs sometimes after accelerating hard to get onto the highway. At any rate, a local shop said the car is posting a code in the TCM (transmission control module) 2-3-2 which means speedometer loss of signal. This is the same with an OBDII reader I used to check out the car, except that the code reader also spits out another code P1618 which talks about linkage between the TCM and the ECU. Any help? The shop basically said the best they could do was replace parts related to this issue until the problem was resolved, however I don’t have the money or the time for something like that. Help! Thank you!
Answer: Since it is a loss of signal but it comes back I would first make sure all the grounds are good. Look close at where the grounds for the transmission and the instrument cluster and make sure they have good contact.
