"2001 Lexus is300: ECU Issues Caused by After Market Intake"

Red 2001 Lexus is300 Right Front View

Is an after market intake a bad idea for my 2001 Lexus is300? I’m about to purchase an aftermarket intake pipe (JoeZ). The car has been running on the stock intake since 2001 and I was wondering if this sudden change in air flow would cause issues with the ECU. Some people tell me to unplug the negative connector on the battery to reset the ecu, is that necessary? Thank you.

Answer: On most newer cars the ECU learns common values about engine conditions and driving habits. When you change the intake pipe, or make any other kind of mod that affects engine performance certain values need to be relearned. Disconnecting the battery for a few minutes will reset these values, and the engine will relearn them with the new part. Some cars actually need to be reset with the factory scan tool, but yours isn’t new enough, disconnecting the battery will do just fine.
