2005 White Toyota Prius |
I have a 2005 Toyota Prius model and I left it for 2 weeks as I was
on holiday. Once I came back the car would not start so I had to get it
towed to a Toyota garage. Once there it took them 3 days to find out
that there was a fault with the ECU. Then they charge me with a hefty
bill of around 1000pounds. They say the warranty does not cover the cost
as the cars mileage is 10300 miles.
I cannot trust them entirely and I was wandering if there was a
warranty on the ecu and for how long. Also does problems like these
occur pretty often with Toyota prius because apparently Toyota only
gives me 1 year warranty on the new ECU.
I would be grateful for the answers, thank you for your help!
Answer: If you were on holiday for 2 weeks, and when
you came back your car would not start, I would have first suspected
that your Prius just needed a simple 12v jumpstart/boost and you would
have been fine (that your 12v accessory battery went flat).
Did you try this before getting the tow to your dealer? Or did you
(or your dealer) accidentially reverse polarities during the jump and
that caused an ECU failure?
You don’t say WHICH ECU you need to have replaced. Depending on what
trim line/option packages you have, there could be up to a dozen
different ECUs on the Prius. Cheapest route would be to go to a
wrecking/salvage/scrap yard and pull a used ECU out of an
accident/crashed Prius.
Warranty is usually by time OR mileage. at 103,000 miles, you would
be past both the basic new vehicle warranty and also the longer hybrid
system warranty, so yes I’d expect that you would have to pay for any
new parts.
New Toyota replacement parts are usually only warranted for 1 year,
whether it is an ECU or a CD player or an engine, or… So it is not
specific to your car/part.
